It is also a great anti-oxidant and I use it after workouts to keep my immune system strong.

I'm starting to wonder if the Vitamin C I'm taking before bed may be causing my acid reflux and cough attacks that I sometimes get at night.

I have been using vitamin C tablets (500mg) after each meal. I always have one before bed.

Since learning this new information about the possible correlation between acid reflux and vitamin C, I am going to try an experiment to see if there is validity to what I've been learning.

I don't want to have to cut this valuable antioxidant from my supplement regime, so I'm going to start by cutting out vitamin C at the last meal before bedtime to see if it makes a difference with my GERD symptoms or not.

What do I have to lose. I'm probably taking more V-C than I need, so I'm sure the experiment won't hurt.

Anyways, I'll post my vitamin C and acid reflux experiment results after I have given things a try for a couple of weeks.

Privacy Policy

We recognize that your privacy is important. I was trying to get my jet lag under control and was dozing off here and there throughout the day.

By the time I got into a solid sleep late last night... I woke up with my throat burning 3 times before I finally went to the kitchen and reached for apple cider vinegar. 1 TBSP down the hatch and that was the end of it. I think I need to keep a little cup and bottle of vinegar next to the bed for times like these.

Here are some more acid reflux resources pertain to apple cider vinegar that I cam across:

Acid Reflux Apple Cider Vinegar | Treating Acid Reflux Naturally - Acid reflux natural remedies,an little known remedy is apple cider vinegar. Sometimes there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day and I end up eating my last meal fairly close to going to sleep.

There have been times, when pressed for time, when I'll have a quick protein shake with some peanuts about 30 minutes before lights out... then WHAMO... I am awaken to severe gastroesophageal reflux disease cough fits. Unless you've encountered one of these gastro oesophageal reflux symptoms, it really is difficult to comprehend how uncomfortable they can be.

Major lesson learned: If you suffer from acid reflux symptoms and are prone to coughing fits, don't eat too close to bed.

One thing I have found that helps from preventing severe heartburn is to take 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar after my meal. This seems to break my food down faster and I tend to get less of GERD reaction when I do this.

Now if I can just remember to try this remedy after my last meal of the day, I just may end up having to deal with less acid reflux and cough fits.

Foods That Trigger Acid Reflux

I don't know about you, but I have found certain foods that trigger acid reflux are worse than others.

These are:

peanut butter and peanuts

milk chocolate

butter spreads

high fat take out foods

soda pop

coffee

coffee creamer

milk, yogurt, cream that is high in fat

oranges and orange juice, most citruis fruits

beer, wine and hard liquor

some fatty meats

All these foods trigger heartburn for me and play havoc on my GERD symptoms.

The problems start at the lower esophageal sphincter, otherwise know as the LES.

Sometimes stomach acid "spits" into this tube and backs up the esophagus.

The worst of it is for me is at night time when acid reflux reaches my throat, causing me to wake up abruptly into a coughing attack.

I find it best to stay away from these foods that trigger acid reflux and stick with heartburn friendly food.

Some helpful links from other blogs:

Acid Reflux Diet: What You Should Eat - The first thing you need to do is find the foods that trigger acid reflux. It is usually on these nights that I am woken up by the dreaded reflux reaching my throat and sending me into a coughing fit that can last a good ½ hour or so.

So what do I do? I listen to my body and try to stay away from late night junk food binges. Sure I’ll still have a treat every once in a while… but it won’t be late at night.

I think if some people with acid reflux diet problems would simply listen to their bodies, and act accordingly… they would likely receive less acid reflux attacks. Again, this can vary between individuals and a more rigorous treatment may need to be discussed with your doctor.

So which foods is more digestion friendly to those with bad heartburn?

Again, everyone has different reactions to certain foods, so bear that in mind when you look at MY anti acid reflux diet below.

Here is what I eat to help control my GERD symptoms. This type of diet also works well with the weight training that I do, as I need my protein intake a little higher than most people might.

To me, this does not taste too much like an acid reflux bland diet... but it did take a couple of weeks of getting used to eating this way when I first started.

Meal 1
- 1/2 cup large flake oatmeal (not the instant stuff)
- small banana
- 6 egg whites prepared on the side
- water

Meal 2
- sliced chicken breast on whole wheat or whole grain bread
- a little fat free mayo
- small apple
- small salad (no tomatoes - too much acid) with low fat dressing
- water

Meal 3
- flank steak, chicken breast or very lean pork
- boiled carrots, cabbage or greens beans
- backed potato or yam
- water

NOW HERE'S MY TRICK!

Because I need a little more protein from meat in my diet, I'll have a 4th meal about 1 to 1-1/2 hours before bedtime.

What I have learned to really help keep my heartburn under control, is to avoid having any more starchy carbohydrates (i.e. bread, potatoes, cereal, etc.) after my 3rd meal above (which is usually at 6pm).

By sticking with eating a piece of chicken breast and maybe some green beans for my last meal, I have found that I do not get acid reflux at night, nor am I woken up from severe heartburn.

If I was to only eat 3 meals a day, I would probably have my last meal (#3 above) about 3 hours before going to bed. This will give me plenty of time to make sure my food is properly digested and the stomach acid does not “backup” my esophagus and into my throat while I’m trying to sleep.

I’m sure some of you probably have more severe GERD problems than I do, and if so, I encourage you to talk with your health care professional about developing an acid reflux bland diet that works specifically for you.

About Me - Joe

Welcome to my blog about getting acid reflux diet help.

My name is Joe and I'm from Canada. Chewing ¼ to ½ a gram of DGL, 20 to 30 minutes before eating meals, has shown to ease GERD discomforts. For those that suffer from acid reflux at night, DGL can also be used prior to going to bed.

Known to be one of the herbs to cure acid reflux, DGL can also be taken as capsules.

As always, be sure to check with your doctor before trying any new reflux remedies such as DGL.

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice has also been used to treat canker sores and other infections.

Sometimes, indigestion troubles happen when the acid in your stomach is pushed up the esophagus and even as far up as your throat or mouth. Many who have experienced this burning pain look to something for immediate relief.

If you suffer from reflux, keep in mind that there are other things you can do, outside of natural supplementation, to make your life easier.

Lose some weight if you are over weight and especially if you are obese. Eating smaller meals will also help by reducing pressure on the LES, otherwise known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter. Have a look at this site for some helpful weight loss tips.

Stop smoking. Add to the fact that smoking is dangerous to your overall health it can also reduce the amount of saliva your body produces which is vital to the protection of your esophagus. Smoking has also been known to agitate the acid in your stomach further and add to the reflux problem.

Avoid eating certain foods that are stomach acid agitators. Everyone is different and some may react to certain foods differently than others. High fat take out food can be acid reflux culprits for some and acidic foods may cause problems for others. Use common sense; if you are having heartburn symptoms after eating certain foods, that is a good indicator what foods to avoid. Try eating healthy foods mostly.

Although DGL can be an effect tool in minimizing reflux problems, be careful when using products containing licorice and acid reflux. Some licorice supplements and can elevate blood pressure or cause other problems. Here is some info on migraine headaches that may be useful. Again, everyone is different so it is always best to talk with your physician or health care practitioner to be sure a licorice DGL acid reflux relief protocol is right for you.

Helpful links:

Natural Heartburn Treatments Versus Other Treatments - DGL, acronym for deglycyrrhizinated licorice is readily available at any health and lifestyle shops in the form of chewing gums and tablets. When it comes to getting my 8 hours of rest, there is nothing worse than being woken up from a deep sleep only to catch myself near choking on whatever crept up my esophagus while dozing away. This has sent me into a severe coughing fit that has lasted up to a half an hour before getting my passageway cleared.

A big factor in whether or not I actually wake up from an acid reflux attack is what I ate before going to bed. Although there are many foods that cause heartburn, I have found that carbohydrates eaten in large portions before bed, that are acidic in nature, affect me the worst. Obviously eating a plate of spaghetti and meatballs with Italian sauce before lights out is not the best idea. However there have been times where I have over indulged with such food late at night and paid the price.

I usually eat fairly small meals throughout the day to assist with proper digestion, but sometimes having a couple of larger meals during the day, due to a hectic work schedule; can be the norm for days at a time. It is usually on these days that I suffer symptoms of GERD, otherwise known as gastroesophageal reflux disease.

A little background with my gastric reflux problems…

I became aquatinted with persistent night time heartburn during my late 30’s. My gastroesophageal reflux disorder kept waking me up whenever I ate acidic foods. For a while, I would take a few antacid tablets right before bed, hoping that would stop any problems before they began brewing. Unfortunately, these acid reflux remedies didn’t do much to stop the coughing fits that I was awakening to. Not a fun encounter to say the least. Apparently, once reflux hits the throat it then becomes laryngopharyngeal reflux disease.

I tried to control the reflux problems by sticking to small meals throughout the day and not eating any starchy carbohydrates before bed time (read pasta, rice, etc.). Instead, I would sometimes eat meat with green vegetables, such as a small piece of chicken breast with broccoli or green beans, as my last meal. Often times this did the trick, and Soya sauce was my savior.

When I knew avoiding a large meal in the evening just wasn’t going to happen, I tried using 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar after my meal for acid reflux relief. I have to say, it wasn’t the easiest thing to get down at the time, but it worked like a charm for me. I’ve also taken white vinegar when in a pinch at a restaurant with the same after results. Everyone is different, but this is what worked for me.

If you have any remedies for your acid reflux symptoms I’d be glad to post them up.

Getting Acid Reflux Diet Help

Welcome to Acid Reflux Diet Help.
